Attention Spans and the Bottom Line: How to Boost Productivity and Profits

Does attention span affect business growth and profitability? In a word yes. Learn powerful strategies to increase attention span and profits

Are you feeling frazzled and distracted, as though your attention span has vanished?

If you answered “yes,” you’re not alone. Endless screens, notifications, and distractions compete for your attention span. Business models from social media companies focus on one thing. The focus is on how to grab your attention span for profit.

Johann Hari wrote Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention — and How to Think Deeply Again. What you’ll read will shock you to the core.

Society is the emperor with no clothes. We’re enriching the companies robbing us of our attention spans.

Here’s a rhetorical question for you:

Do you want to grow your business and, at one point, capture financial freedom with your exit?

If you answered “yes,” and I know you did, you’ll need to regain control of your attention span.

My attention span is helping owners both grow their businesses and prepare for a future exit. After all, you want a thriving and profitable business to capture the best deal instead of any deal.

Who am I, and how do I know?

I started my eLearning company right out of school with no money, experience, or team. Failure became my new best friend. My grit and passion kept me in the game long enough to experience success.

With success, I received a knock at the door from an experienced and smart buyer. I said “no” to a 7-figure offer and “yes” to mastering the art and science of a successful liquidity event.

I created the Deep Wealth 9-step roadmap to help capture the best deal.

Two years later, I said “yes” to a 9-figure deal.

As powerful as the 9-step roadmap, you need the right attention span for business success.

Why You’ve Lost Your Attention Span

Show me your attention span and I’ll tell you your future — Jeffrey Feldberg

Endless distractions, busy schedules, and technology rob you of your attention span. Like a frog in boiling water, you’ve lost your attention span without realizing it.

Let’s get one thing straight. It’s not your fault. To understand the root cause, let’s go back to the beginning.

Many of the titans of business today are social media companies. And the same social media companies profit from robbing you of your attention span.

Some of the world’s smartest minds focus on keeping your attention span for as long as possible. Powerful AI algorithms create a model of how you think and operate. The same algorithms work 24/7 to devise ways to grab your attention span.

The narrative is a simple one. The more time you spend on the social media platform, the more money you generate for them. Greed and profits are the drivers of social media platforms.

A 2021 Gallup survey says it all. From 2002 to 2016, Americans read, on average, 15 books a year. In 2021 the average number of books read dropped to 12. There’s no end in sight for the downward trend.

The number of books read per year is like the canary in a coal mine. The University of Edinburgh and King’s College London’s research says it all. Reading more books increases intelligence, brain power, and empathy.

When you’re in control of your attention span, you gain the insights to grow your business. You also set yourself up to thrive and prosper.

The Fatal Consequences Of Losing Your Attention Span

Focus and simplicity…once you get there, you can move mountains — Steve Jobs.

Losing your attention span creates fatal consequences for you and your business. And it’s not only you as your employees lack focus.

A lost attention span ushers in decreases in productivity and growth. Say goodbye to a market disruption while you’re saying hello to mistakes.

A frazzled focus leads to poor decisions. From front-line employees to your leadership team, you’ve lost your edge.

Things go from bad to worse when you are amid a liquidity event. Step Five of the Deep Wealth 9-step roadmap is mindset. Your mindset directly correlates to capturing the best deal instead of any deal.

The right mindset ensures you have clarity throughout your liquidity event. The right mindset also protects you and your team from deal fatigue.

As an example, let’s look at DC Comics superhero Superman. Superman’s strength and superiority disappear in the presence of a material called Kryptonite.

A fractured attention span is your Kryptonite.

You lack the focus and mindset to navigate through a liquidity event. As a result, you become susceptible to the pressures of a liquidity event and buyers’ tactics.

Yes, you still undergo extreme pressure even with preparation heading into a liquidity event. With your financial freedom hanging in the balance, you have one goal.

Your goal is to capture the best deal instead of any deal.

Increase Your Attention Span To Increase Your Bottom Line

Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory — Bill Russell

Increasing your attention span increases your bottom line.

With an increased attention span, you and your team regain the time to think and focus. In Step Two of the Deep Wealth 9-step roadmap are X-Factors that increase enterprise value.

Time and focus unleash creativity to create a better business model. Your focus on what counts through another crucial X-Factor, culture.

Become the change you want to see. Let’s consider that distractions are front and center for your team as much or more than you. Endless notifications from apps and social media lead the charge. Distractions steal time at the desk and in meetings.

You set the example when you become the change and remove the distractions to regain focus.

Step One of the Deep Wealth 9-step roadmap is the Big Picture. In the Big Picture, we look for inflection points that can do one of two things.

An inflection point left unchecked has your competitors put you out of business. An inflection point found in the early days as you put yourself out of business and into a bigger business.

The benefit of mastering inflection points is creating massive market disruptions. A lack of focus has you become the victim of an inflection point instead of the victor.

How To Focus For Success

The only prudence in life is concentration — Ralph Waldo Emerson

An increased attention span and focus increase success. Period. End of story.

What do you do, and where do you start?

Actions that are low effort with high reward included employees using noise-canceling headphones. Team members with offices close the door and put up a do not disturb sign. And let’s not forget a workspace that is both organized and neat.

Enrich your culture with privacy boundaries. Instead of phone calls, encourage email. Promote regular breaks to help people recharge and refocus. Breaks also prevent burnout and increase productivity.

Circling back to email, encourage team members to check emails at specific times. While you’re at it, have everyone turn off notification sounds and alerts for new emails. At the same time, encourage everyone to turn off notifications from apps.

App notifications have one goal: to have you spend more time in the app to generate revenue for the make of the app. Let’s focus on increasing your business deep wealth.

Let’s talk about meetings. Although meetings aren’t part of social media or alluring apps, they are distractions. Consider a “no meeting policy” to reduce distractions. For example, certain times or days banish meetings. Instead, team members focus on uninterrupted work.

Claiming back your attention span enables you to unleash your business success. The time and focus you gain go towards mastery of the Deep Wealth 9-step roadmap. Business growth increases, as does your enterprise value.

What To Expect When You Re-Claim Your Attention Span

FOCUS — Follow One Course Until Successful — Robert Kiyosaki

When you and your team reclaim your attention span, you open up the floodgates of success. For starters, productivity increases. That “innocent” app notification that interrupts you isn’t innocent. Gloria Mark studies digital distraction at the University of California, Irvine.

Mark found that every distraction takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds to refocus. A mere 20 app notifications cost you 8 hours to get back into the flow. Your day is over before it begins.

With a long attention span, you improve decision-making. You have the time to think through, research, and assess the best path forward.

Creativity also catapults. And it’s creativity that helps you discover, refine, and improve your X-Factors.

With more time, you focus on the priorities that take your business to the next level.

Every step of the Deep Wealth 9-step roadmap has you do two things. First, you find and remove those dangerous skeletons in the closet. Second, you find those hidden Rembrandts in the attic and put them out for public display.

Wasted time is now replaced with improved business relationships. By listening to your clients, for example, you can find new painful problems to solve. The new problems are often inflection points in disguise. Your focus helps you leverage the inflection points into a market disruption.

Regaining your attention span is the path that leads to business success. You can now provide resources and support to employees to move the dial. You’re playing the long game. With your financial future in the balance, you want to best company to capture the best deal.
